Wichita Symphony Orchestra
The Wichita Symphony Orchestra was formed in 1906 by Theodore Lindberg. The first musicians, students of Mr. Lindberg's Wichita College of Music and a few professionals performed at the Crawford. The professionals were paid $5 each per concert, the poor students (which still happens today, performed for free).
Capping 25 years of progressive achievement, the Symphony moved from East High Auditorium in 1969 to the acoustically perfected Concert Hall of Century II. In 1966 it had received a $650,000 Ford Foundation grant, matched by $606,335 from the people of Kansas. Today the Wichita Symphony presents 10 classic programs October through April. A special outdoor performance in May at Kennedy Plaza closes the annual Wichita River Festival.
