All alerts are delivered to you by email. Alerts sent by text message to your cell phone are also available.

  • Citizen Alerts inform all registered users of public safety concerns in your area. The alerts contain information about crime trends, descriptions of suspects, missing persons, and advice on personal safety and how to safeguard property.
  • Business Alerts are targeted to specific business types so your business will receive information about crimes that are pertinent to your business.
  • Case Alerts allow law enforcement to automatically disseminate information about open cases to all Registered Citizen Alert users.
  • Watch Group Alerts allow law enforcement to send targeted alerts to specific neighborhoods with Information about crimes that are happening in their immediate area.
Secure twoway communication between public and local law enforcement

Probably the biggest benefit of the Citizen Alert Network is the way it allows twoway communication between law enforcement and the public.
  • Law enforcement can update citizens on situations that require their attention.
  • As the public learns about fugitives, missing persons and unsolved cases, it can provide tips directly to the officer and detective assigned to the case.

Wichita Police Department

Identity Theft Checklist

What should I do if my Purse, Wallet or Checkbook is Lost or Stolen?

If your property was taken by force or threat, or you need immediate assistance, please call 911.

For non-emergencies, you can make a police report by calling the Wichita Police Department, Police Case Desk at (316) 268-4221.

You will need to make a police report to document lost or stolen items.  The police report will assist us in the event your property is recovered.  Your bank or financial institution may require a police report if you report unauthorized checks and/or credit card transactions.

Credit Cards

If your credit/debit cards are lost or stolen, immediately contact your bank or credit card issuer to cancel the card.  Prompt reporting can help prevent unauthorized use of your card.  If the credit card number has been compromised while you still have possession of the plastic card, immediately notify your bank or credit card issuer to cancel the card.  Your bank or credit card issuer may require you to complete a dispute form for any unauthorized charges.  The credit card company may issue you a temporary credit and issue a “charge back” to business that accepted the card number without viewing the card.  The business, which then suffers the loss, may make a police report if it chooses to do so.

Checks

If your checks or account numbers are stolen, notify your bank or financial institution.  Work with your financial institution to close any affected accounts.  If your checks are lost or stolen and is being used in Wichita by someone forging your signature, call your bank or financial institution to close your account.  Ask your financial institution to notify its check verification service.  Your bank may require you to complete an Affidavit of Forgery for any forged check that clears.  Your bank may credit your account once you complete the Affidavit of Forgery.  The business accepting the forged check may file a police report since they may have lost cash or merchandise as a result of fraud.

If you are reimbursed by a business or financial institution for a monetary loss to you, the business becomes the victim of the forgery or fraud.  You are a victim of the theft of your credit card, check or identity.  The financial institution or business will be responsible for following up on their loss.

Identity Theft

Identity Theft occurs when someone uses your personal information with the intent defraud for any benefit.  For example, someone pretends to be you by using your personal information to create and open new credit card accounts to make purchases and loans for financial gain.  The theft or loss of personal information in wallets, purses and on checks can be used by criminals to commit Identity Theft.

If someone has used you personal information such as your name along with your social security number, Driver’s License number, bank account number or other identifying information report the fraud to the following organizations:

Contact the nationwide consumer reporting companies to place a fraud alert on

your credit report.  A fraud alert can help prevent an identity thief from opening

additional accounts in your name.  Ask for a copy of your credit report to review.

Crime Stoppers

Neighborhood Initiative

The Crime Stoppers Neighborhood Initiative is a project designed to encourage citizens

to report crime and criminal activity around neighborhood drug houses. Citizens are

also encouraged to report all suspicious activity regardless where it occurs.

The initiative is not meant to replace citizens reporting of criminal activity to their

community police officer or City Hall neighborhood assistant. Rather, the project is

designed to give citizens an anonymous alternative to report drug houses or other

crimes in their neighborhood should they choose to do so.

Crime Stoppers encourages citizens to get to know their beat and community police

officers who can assist them in many ways. These officers have a broad perspective of

activities taking place in the neighborhoods the patrol and can be a valuable resource.

In addition, Crime Stoppers encourages citizens to develop a working relationship with

the neighborhood assistant in their city council district. These City employees can

answer questions about many city services, and are can assist citizens in many ways.

Crime Stoppers has expanded the way it now receives anonymous tips from citizens.

o Citizens can still report criminal activity anonymously by calling 2672111.

o Citizens living outside of Wichita can report criminal activity anonymously by

calling 1800222TIPS

o Citizens can report criminal activity anonymously by sending a text message on

their cell phones to CRIMES (274637) and beginning their message with the word

TIP217. It’s a good idea to program this number into your cell phone address

book so it will be handy when you need it.

o Citizens can also report criminal activity anonymously by going to the Crime

Stoppers website, www.wsccs.com.

o If citizens choose do to so, they can report criminal activity by going to the

Wichita Police Department website, www.wichitapolice.com, going to the

Records Information link, and clicking on the link to Report Suspicious Activity in

Your Neighborhood.

o All tips received by Crime Stoppers are anonymous and no one will ever ask

your name.

Top 10 signs of an Abuser

1. Jealousy & Possessiveness – Becomes jealous over your family, friends, co-workers. Tries to isolate you. Views his woman and children as his property instead of as unique individuals. Accuses you of cheating or flirting with other men without cause. Always asks where you’ve been and with whom in an accusatory manner.

2. Control – He is overly demanding of your time and must be the center of your attention. He controls finances, the car, and the activities you partake in. Becomes angry if woman begins showing signs of independence or strength.

3. Superiority – He is always right, has to win or be in charge. He always justifies his actions so he can be “right” by blaming you or others. A verbally abusive man will talk down to you or call you names in order to make himself feel better. The goal of an abusive man is to make you feel weak so they can feel powerful. Abusers are frequently insecure and this power makes them feel better about themselves.

4. Manipulates – Tells you you’re crazy or stupid so the blame is turned on you. Tries to make you think that it’s your fault he is abusive. Says he can’t help being abusive so you feel sorry for him and you keep trying to “help” him. Tells others you are unstable.

5. Mood Swings – His mood switches from aggressive and abusive to apologetic and loving after the abuse has occurred.

6. Actions don’t match words – He breaks promises, says he loves you and then abuses you.

7. Punishes you – An emotionally abusive man may withhold sex, emotional intimacy, or plays the “silent game” as punishment when he doesn’t get his way. He verbally abuses you by frequently criticizing you.

8. Unwilling to seek help – An abusive man doesn’t think there is anything wrong with him so why should he seek help? Does not acknowledge his faults or blames it on his childhood or outside circumstances.

9. Disrespects women – Shows no respect towards his mother, sisters, or any women in his life. Thinks women are stupid and worthless.

10. Has a history of abusing women and/or animals or was abused himself – Batterers repeat their patterns and seek out women who are submissive and can be controlled. Abusive behavior can be a generational dysfunction and abused men have a great chance of becoming abusers. Men who abuse animals are much more likely to abuse women also.
