The Fleet Maintenance Division purchases, repairs and maintains vehicles and equipment. As the name suggests, this section maintains most City vehicles (excluding large buses and Airport units) and equipment, from patrol cars to street sweepers and road graders. A total of over 2,800 pieces of major equipment is included.
Staffing is provided 24 hours a day, 5 days a week. Weekend coverage is provided by a combination of on-call staff and service contractors. The 2007 budget for the division is $12,460,160.
Central Stores, a section of Fleet Maintenance, procures and issues parts and materials to Fleet Maintenance garages and to operating departments.
Fuel management is also a function of this division. The City of Wichita consumes about 958,000 gallons of diesel fuel and 778,000 gallons of unleaded fuel each year. The fuel powers some 2,700 vehicles and numerous pieces of small equipment and emergency generators. Fuel is dispensed through thirty-five locations in and around Wichita.
