The Arkansas River Advisory Committee provides a two-way communication link to the diverse elements within the community and river basin; serves as a liaison to organizations or interest groups; assists in building a consensus for the various programs that will be initiated to reduce pollution in the river; assists in the review and implementation of a public education program; provides input on the development of a long range River improvement plan; examines issues relating to building partnerships with various stakeholders impacting the River Quality; identifies and evaluates Best Management Practices information; develops effective legislative support for Arkansas River initiatives; and performs in other advisory capacities.
In, 2000, the City Council created a River Advisory Committee and the City Manager formed a Technical Task Force to examine river issues from a technical perspective.

The Arkansas River Advisory Committee is chaired by City Council member Sharon Fearey. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month.Committee members include representatives from the City of Wichita, Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks, Earth Awareness Research for Tomorrow's Habitat (EARTH), Sierra Club, the Arkansas River Coalition, the Wichita Paddlers, the Kansas Canoe & Kayak Association, Wichita Festivals Inc., Riverside Neighborhood Associations, the Wichita Chamber of Commerce, USD 259, KU School of Medicine, and many others.
