Lost and Found Pets

 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Question: Why do I need to tag my pet?

Your pet's tag is its phone call home.  Tagging your pet with both an identification and a rabies tag is the only way to ensure that your pet will be returned to you if it turns up missing. The Wichita Animal Shelter handles hundreds of pets each week and cannot possibly locate these animals' owners without proper identification.  Also, the animal shelter scans all animals for microchip implants. You can discuss this form of identification with your veterinarian.

Question: Why is it important for me to secure my pet at all times?

As a pet owner, you are responsible for your pet. If your pet runs loose and is contained by the Wichita Animal Shelter, you will be assessed charges -sometimes costly ones - to have your animal returned to you.

Question: What do I do if my pet is missing?

  • Begin looking for your pet immediately, don't think it will come home on its own.
  • Visit the Wichita Animal Shelter and the Kansas Humane Society and
  • walk through the facilities at least every three days from the date you lost your pet.

Keep in mind that only you can identify your pet, so you need to come see the animals brought in to both shelters. The shelter handles more than 12,000 pet animals per year so it is important that concerned owners play an active role in finding their pets.

You may want to run a lost advertisement in local publications and post flyers at local high traffic retail establishments in your area. Be sure and get permission from store owners before you post any flyers. Don't give up!!! It can take weeks to locate a lost pet.

Question: Why check the Wichita Animal Shelter Daily?

You must check the Wichita Animal Shelter every day if your pet is lost because only 16% of the animals handled by the Wichita Animal Shelter are reclaimed. After three days at the shelter, a tiny percentage of animals are adopted out, but most are euthanized. Click here to see the Daily Animal Pickup List to see if your pet is on the list!
