How to Prepare Your Household Hazardous Waste

Household hazardous materials services are paid for through landfill disposal fees. Therefore, it only makes cents to properly manage your household hazardous materials first, then use the collection site as a last resort. It also makes good health and safety sense to use less or non-hazardous alternatives.

Household Hazardous Materials Collection Program is for Sedgwick County Single-Family Residents only.

Do not bring:

  • empty containers
  • empty paint cans
  • toasters
  • microwaves
How to Prepare Your Household Hazardous Materials for Transport to the Site
  • Keep product in original container, unless leaking (waste oil may go in plastic milk jugs).

  • Make sure containers are intact, and not leaking.

  • Make sure containers have a tight lid.

  • Make sure product is labeled (original if possible), if unknown indicate what it was used for.

  • Transport in boxes, not trash bags.

  • Keep strong acids and bases separated, if possible.

  • Do NOT bring EMPTY containers.
