Trash Cans and Can'ts

Here is a listing of what is allowed to be thrown out in the trash and what is supposed to go to the Household Hazardous Material Collection Facility.

In the Garage/Workshop

Trash Cans
Dispose of small amounts of the items listed below with household trash. Completely dried paints and polishes can be disposed of in the trash as well as completely empty and dried hazardous product containers.

  • Aerosol cans containing no fluids or pressure

  • Ceramic glazes (fire in kiln first)

  • Fertilizers (solid)

  • Paints (if completely dried)

  • Resins, fiberglass, and epoxy glues (solidified)

  • Sheet rock mud

Trash Can'ts
Take the items listed below to the Household Hazardous Material Collection Facility.

Automotive supplies:

  • Aluminum cleaner

  • Antifreeze

  • Auto body filler

  • Carburetor cleaner

  • Car wax

  • Chrome polish

  • Diesel fuel

  • Gasoline

  • Kerosene or lamp oil

Building and woodworking supplies:

  • Caulks

  • Fluorescent lamp with ballasts and tubes (PCBs)

  • Glues and cements

  • Wood preservatives

Garden supplies:

  • Fungicides

  • Herbicides

  • Insecticides

  • Rat, mouse and gopher poison

  • Snail and slug poison

  • Soil fumigants

  • Weed killer

Hobby and pet supplies:

  • Artist's mediums, thinners, fixatives

  • Acrylic paint

  • Chemistry sets

  • Flea powder

  • Oil paint

  • Photographic chemicals/solutions

  • Resins, fiberglass and epoxy (unsolidified)

  • Rubber cement thinner

  • Swimming pool chemicals

Painting Supplies:

  • Latex-based paint

  • Model airplane paint

  • Oil-based paint

  • Paint stripper

  • Paint thinner, turpentine, mineral spirits

In the Home

Trash Cans

  • Completely dried paints and polishes can be disposed of in the trash as well as completely empty and dried hazardous product containers.

  • Aerosol cans containing no fluids or pressure

  • Nail polish, if completely dried

  • Paints, if completely dried

  • Shoe polish, if completely dried

Trash Can'ts
Take the items listed below to the Household Hazardous Material Collection Facility.

Cosmetics:

  • Nail polish (liquid)

  • Nail polish remover

Housecleaning supplies:

  • Cleansers

  • Furniture and floor polish

  • Metal polish

  • Rug cleaners

Laundry supplies:

  • Dry cleaning solvent

  • Moth balls and flakes

  • Spot remover

Medicines:

  • Mercury from a broken thermometer

  • Shampoo for lice

Other products:

  • Aerosol can containing any pressure or fluids

  • Flea powder

  • Lighter fluid

  • Pet shampoo

  • Shoe dye and polish

The items listed below cannot be discarded with household garbage. However, small amounts of these products may be poured down the drain with lots of water. The empty container may then be thrown in the trash after rinsing it three times.

Do not put these products in septic systems:

Cleaners:

  • Ammonia cleaners (never mix with other products)

  • Chlorine bleach (never mix with ammonia)

  • Disinfectants

  • Drain openers

  • Tub, tile, shower stall cleaners

Cosmetics:

  • Cuticle remover

  • Depilatory

  • Hair permanent solutions

  • Hair straightener solutions

Medicines:

  • Liquid medicine

  • Prescription medicine
