FINAL ARCAP Master Plan 2008
2011 Projects and Activities Include:
Reconstruction of the Lincoln Street dam to provide safe passage and additional access points – City of Wichita
Development of consistent graphic elements for safety signage – KDWP&T
Development of access point signage including route identification, safety, and amenity information – KDWP&T
Construction of an access point at the former Derby Public Works & Utilities site (public information meeting were held last month) – City of Derby
The Arkansas River Access Coalition, a consortium of municipalities, counties, and various user groups, has untited to develop 120 miles of the Arkansas River into a recreational amenity that will draw users from all around the region.
Desired recreational uses include, but are not limited to, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, biking, wildlife viewing, fishing, and hunting. To achieve this objective, a Master Plan has been created as a blueprint for developing access points at desired intervals in a way that is both cost-effective and protective of the Arkansas River's natural amenities and character.
In order to create a sound and achievable Master Plan, the project team, Applied Ecological Services, Inc. (AES) and Patti Banks Associates (PBA), conducted a GIS- and field-based site suitability analysis that evaluated hydrologic, stream stability, and accessibility constraints and opportunities. This analysis also incorporated public comments and concerns to ensure that the Master Plan reflected the needs and concerns of the public.
