Field Trips
A field trip to the WATER Center connects students with a local environmental project, wildlife viewing opportunities, and outdoor experiences. WATER Center field trips are: Aligned with State Science Standards Customized for each grade level Free! Every field trip includes the "story" of the WATER Center and a tour of the groundwater treatment building. Looking for ways to extend your field trip time? incorporate time at the playground incorporate a picnic lunch on-site add in another field trip stop at a neighboring venue such as the Kansas Firefighters Museum, PRo Kansas Miller Recycling Center,or any of the Museums on the River Below each of the following headings are field trip options based on grade level. Below each of the following headings are field trip options based on grade level. Or, WATER Center staff can customize a field trip experience for you, if you prefer!
Pre-Kindergarten - Kindergarten
SENSE IT - Students will explore the WATER Center using four of their five senses. Exploration will include time in the museum as well as a staff-led nature hike. Students will hear a story book that compliments their nature hike experience.
WATER WONDERS - Students understand that they use water in many ways and that plants and animals need clean water as well. Students will explore the museum and nature trail while, focusing on water. Students will hear a story book that compliments their exploration experience.
1st - 5th Grade
AN INCREDIBLE JOURNEY - Water on Earth is infinitely recycled. However, water does not always move easily or quickly from one place on the planet to another. Students will discover that each water droplet takes a unique journey through the water cycle.
IS IT ALIVE? - Students will explore the WATER Center and look for living, non-living, and things that are no longer alive. We will get a little slimy as we sort through the water for leaves, rocks, and water insects.
SOGGY HABITATS - Water creatures need healthy habitats to survive. Students will discover the hidden living things in the WATER Center’s creek and discuss the special tools these animals have for surviving underwater. Students will learn that some of these water animals only spend part of their life cycle underwater.
6th - 12th Grade
WATERSHED CHEMISTRY & CRITTERS - Students will participate in several hands-on activities to understand the concept of a watershed. Students will collect both chemical and biological samples from two or more locations of the WATER Center’s creek and the Arkansas River. Using investigative tools, students will grade the water quality and discuss results.
