Water Quality

The mission of this program is to provide services to the citizens of our jurisdiction through the coordination, interpretation, and enforcement of state and local regulations on water wells and on-site sewage disposal systems, and to aid in protecting the public health by preventing the spread of disease and by preventing the degradation of water quality resources of Wichita and Sedgwick County.

This program serves local residents utilizing on-site sewage disposal systems and on-site water wells. We work closely with land developers, general contractors, realtors, lending institutions, sewage facility contractors, water well contractors, homeowners, planning department staff, engineering contractors, soil testing companies, and staff from various local and state agencies involved in coordinating activities, such as the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, the Sedgwick County Soil Conservation District, the Extension Service, Sedgwick County Code Enforcement, Sedgwick County Public Services Bureau, and others to provide our services.

We coordinate with local water well contractors who submit well drilling logs as required by City Code.

We coordinate with local Planning Commission activities, such as review of Zoning cases and hardship cases.

We perform construction inspections for on-site sewage facility contractors.

We coordinate inspection services with homeowners, realtors, and lending institutions to inspect water wells and on-site sewage facilities upon request in the County, and as required by code in the City of Wichita.

We handle referrals regarding malfunctioning sewage facilities from other programs in Environmental Services.

We handle complaints regarding malfunctioning sewage facilities or improperly constructed water wells from the public.

We work with engineers and soil testing companies to provide better customer service for their clients.
