The economy, however, was beginning to pick up a little, and in the spring of 1935, the City Commission voted to restore paid vacation which had been missing for the past two years. The trend all over the country (except for Wichita) was also to restore the pay slashes in part or in full.

Always on the lookout for the Fire Department, the Public Safety Committee of the Chamber of Commerce instigated the installation of a fire lane for the No. 1 Station. When an alarm was received, red lights in front of the station came on and a siren sounded to warn motorists when an apparatus was ready to make a run. In addition, red lights were hung over each intersection and connected to the fire dispatcher's board where they could be operated ahead of the apparatus and thus control the traffic.

In February 1935, the City Commission voted to approve a work relief program project to build a Fire-Police memorial to honor those who gave their lives in the line of duty.
