1963 saw an increased amount of activity in fire prevention as the Fire Marshal Clarke Longenecker waged war against grass and trash fires - 379 in 71 days. In fire prevention activities, Wichita once again finished among the top ten cities in its population class and received an award of merit. In addition to its enforcement efforts of fire codes, activities of the safety caravan to the schools and training for hospital employees were emphasized.

A proposed ordinance to prohibit smoking in retail stores was made by Chief McGaughey but died for lack of support from the business community.
