One of the first amendments in 1905 allowed money to be used as prizes for "efficient, well-drilled and skilled fire companies" belonging to an Association and competing at the annual state tournaments of the Association. Other amendments over the years now allow the Association to provide members the protection of life and accident insurance; gratuities to the dependents of firefighters killed in the line of duty; medical and hospitalization benefits; and leave of absence with pay when off duty because of a sickness or injury.
The Firemen's Relief funds are obtained from the Commissioner of Insurance in accordance with the Firefighter's Relief Act. The Act provides for a qualified Association to receive the benefit of a tax of 2% of the premiums written and insuring against the hazards of fire on property located within the corporate limits of the City of Wichita.
