Sign Permits and Inspection

The Sign Inspection section of OCI enforces City of Wichita Code Chapter 24, concerning Commercial Sign Permit Applications, Portable Sign Permits Applications, Temporary Sign Permit Applications, Commercial Balloon Permit Applications, and sign complaints.

Who can install a sign in the City of Wichita?

A Wichita-licensed sign hanger must submit signage for evaluation and permitting prior to any installation or construction. Only city-licensed and bonded sign hangers are allowed to install signage within the city limits of Wichita.

What needs to be submitted to receive a sign permit?

Sign Permit applications have to be submitted independent of Building Plans. Approval of Building Plans for construction does not provide approval for signage noted on submitted building plans.

What is the requirements for portable signs?

Portable and other Temporary Signs such as banners, streamers, bunting and balloons or other advertising decoration signs require permits provided by the Sign Inspection section. See Notice for Portable Sign Owners for more information on requirements and appropriate locations.

Portable signs may be licensed on an annual basis for $100.00 or $10.00 per month although they are treated as permanent signage that must meet the appropriate distancing requirements of permanent signage. Get Sign Application Information on portable signs.

Banners and streamers are evaluated as to use, cannot exceed 128 square feet and start at $5.00. Balloons are regulated as to permitted size, time and location by Chapter 24.

Fees for balloons are $15.00 for each 7-day period and must be obtained by a licensed sign hanger.

For more information, see the Temporary Sign Code Ordinances.

Are signs allowed to be placed on public property?

No signs are allowed to be installed on or over public property without specific authorization as per city sign code.
