Policy on Maximizing Native Species & Minimizing Pesticides
Approved by Board of Park Commissioners, February 10, 2003 In order to preserve our natural and economic resources, the City of Wichita will maximize use of native species and minimize use of pesticides and herbicides. Native Plants PreferenceWichita public land will be landscaped with a preference for native or indigenous plants. A rationale must be provided for the use of non-native plants in any public development of property. Pesticide Procedures Pesticide application is used only when cultural practices are not adequate to control pests or disease problems. Least-toxic alternative is used when chemicals are necessary for control. Persons applying pesticides shall wear proper attire and follow these practices: timely and thorough washing, including fingernails and glasses; wearing clean clothing and other proper protective gear daily. All manufacture label requirements shall be followed. We will treat only affected areas and using strategies that are sensitive to the needs of the public and the environment. Signs will be posted per manufacturer label for safe re-entry time period. Applications will be scheduled during non-peak times of park use. Our risk management protocol establishes personal baseline cholinesterase levels and monitoring levels during the active season. This testing program is directed towards individuals who apply/handle organophosphates and carbamates. All pesticide containers will be secured while transported on vehicles. All vehicles used in conjunction with pesticides shall be kept clean from pesticide residues and equipment shall be cleaned thoroughly after use to avoid leaving chemicals in the sprayer for prolonged time periods. Storage and mixing areas shall be kept as safe, clean and orderly. Proper records shall be kept and publicly accessible. Certain parks will be designated as "Pesticide Free." Signs will be posted indicating the park is free of pesticides and herbicides. We will publicize our accomplishments and interact within the community in this effort to reduce our use of pesticides and herbicides. Progress will be monitored. Back to Top
