Key Indicators of Community Change

The Key Indicators of Community Change monitors and measures progress towards the achievement of key goals and objectives contained in the Wichita-Sedgwick County Comprehensive Plan, Preparing for Change. Last updated in January 2002, the Comprehensive Plan contains goals and objectives that are intended to shape the future growth and development of the metropolitan area over the next 30 years. These goals and objectives reflect the priorities, underlying values and quality of life expectations of a majority of residents in Sedgwick County. While such goal setting is imperative, it is equally important to evaluate how we are doing as a community in attaining the long term goals we have set for ourselves. A goal not measured is often a goal not achieved.

The Wichita-Sedgwick County Comprehensive Plan is based upon an understanding of current conditions as well as assumptions about the future. The fact that change is inevitable underscores the importance of developing a comprehensive plan monitoring approach that will allow the Comprehensive Plan to remain relevant in an environment of community change.

The annual key indicators report will assist the community in determining whether the trends and changes occurring within the area are consistent with key goals and objectives contained with the Comprehensive Plan. This will enable future discussions regarding what the community is or is not doing to make these goals happen, and help assess what needs to be done to either better achieve these goals or create more appropriate new goals.
