Demolition has begun on several buildings acquired by the City along 21st street. They are located at 212, 222, 224 and 226 E. 21st Street North. The buildings are being torn down in order to install left turn lanes at 21st and Broadway.
Four concepts were reviewed during the design phase. With the BNSF railroad tracks located immediately east of Broadway, the approved concept shifted the new alignment to the west, thus impacting the buildings on the northwest and southwest corners. The buildings have been removed on the southwest corner of the intersection in recent weeks. The remaining buildings in conflict with the intersection improvements are scheduled to be razed over the next two weeks.
The buildings are being demolished by Bradburn Wrecking Company of Wichita which won the demolition contract through the competitive bidding process. The City of Wichita’s Public Works Department is overseeing these demolitions.
Future road improvements will include re-constructing 21st Street between Broadway & Waco to a 3-lane roadway and converting Market & Park Place to two-way between 20th Street and 21st Street. Local funds are paying for the projects. Construction is anticipated to begin in August 2009.
