Nomar International Marketplace Study

Project Overview:

In late 2005, the Greteman Group was hired by the City of Wichita for the purposes of creating an International Marketplace District, centered at 21st Street North and Market Street, that will eventually become the premier destination for ethnic and international retail business, services and cultural entertainment / artistic events in the Wichita region. The consultant will provide the following deliverables necessary for the establishment of an attractive, safe and successful International Marketplace District:

  1. Documentation of potentially eligible historic properties within and adjacent to the International Marketplace District.
  2. An integrated communications plan that includes strategic marketing, public relations and communications plan elements as well as a branding strategy including but not limited to naming, icon or logo development and color schemes, that will enable the International Marketplace District to eventually become the premier destination for ethnic and international retail business, services and cultural entertainment/artistic events in the Wichita region.
  3. An architectural design approach and site concept plan for public and private improvements in the International Marketplace District (including streetscape enhancements, building façade treatments/styles, landscaping treatments, gateway design, way-finding signage, lighting, parking, public jardin) that: reflects, supports and implements the marketing, branding and public relations strategy; creates a safe and inviting place; and, is sensitive to historically significant architectural elements and buildings in the area.

Project Status:

  • A community kick-off meeting was held in January 2006.
  • In February 2006, printed surveys in English, Spanish and Vietnamese were distributed within the project area. An online survey was also created and posted with the City of Wichita, the Greater Wichita Convention & Visitors Bureau and Wichita State University for city and statewide participation. ‘Man-on-the-street’ interviews were also conducted in late February.
  • Completed survey results were presented at a neighborhood community meeting on March 24, 2006.
  • Documentation of historic properties was completed in April 2006.
  • The branding and visual mapping phases of the project were addressed at community meetings on April 25, 2006 and May 23, 2006.
  • Development of district name, architectural design and site concepts occurred during the summer of 2006.
  • The first round of design and architectural recommendations, including the recommended name for the district, were presented at a community meeting on October 24, 2006.
  • The final report was completed in March 2007 incorporating feedback from the community and the Wichita City Council.
