Problems and Crime Trends
Problem Locations
In February, we were having problems with a few people living in the 2800 block of N. Holyoke. These people were involved in burglaries east of N. Oliver and on the east side of town. They would burglarize homes that might have guns in them. They were also intimidating individuals near the home of Holyoke. We were able to recover several stolen guns from the home on Holyoke. The owner and main resident of the home on Holyoke was an older person and did not know what the people were doing. Once we enlightened him on their activities he did not want them staying with him anymore.
The owner had to evict the people off his property through a civil court action. They were finally evicted the beginning of this month, which immediately reduced problems in the immediate area. We will be monitoring the area and home on Holyoke to insure no other situations arise.
Residential burglaries continue to be a leading concern on 47 Beat. The most common residential burglary in the area is to vacant residences for the theft of copper.
We are working on a plan to reduce these burglaries, but
we need your help too.
If you see anyone in or around a vacant house that is not legitimately working on the house; does not belong there; or you think something suspicious is going on, please call 911 immediately to report it. Some other things you might look for that has been connected to this type of crime are listed below:
Anyone walking around a house that has no purpose or reason to be there.
Anyone looking into windows.
Any glass breaking at a neighbor's house
Anyone walking down the street carrying things in trash bags, pillowcases, or backpacks at odd hours or that normally is not in your neighborhood.
Vehicles at houses that are vacant and/or items being loaded into the vehicles.
Anyone going to a house and they park their car on the next block over or around the corner and walk over.
Burglars try to fit into the neighborhood they are targeting and do not want to stand out.
They are trying to get in and out without drawing attention to themselves.
These are just some thoughts, but do not limit it to these only.
You are the best person to decide if something is wrong in your neighborhood.
Recently in the Grove Park area we have experienced an increase in illegal trash dumps. We are doing what we can to deter this and catch the violators. If you see anyone dumping trash illegally call 911 right away with the description of the people and vehicle involved. If we are close by we can sometimes catch them in the act, cite them for the violation, and even get them to pick the trash up. We want to help you keep your neighborhood clean and safe.
We are currently working gang activity in the following locations:
-
2200 N. Volutsia
-
1700 E. 23rd St.
-
2600 N. Piatt
Traffic Issues
We are doing traffic enforcement on 25th Street between Hillside and Oliver.
Please slow down to avoid a citation.
We have noticed drivers speeding on North Minnesota between 21st St. and 25th St. We will be doing enforcement in this area as well.
