Crime Prevention Tips of the Month

BURGLARIES!

Open Garage Burglaries:  These occur when the resident leaves their garage door open or partially open, even for a short period of time.  These can occur even with the resident at home and often occur at all hours of the day and night.  Some commonly stolen items are:

Tools     Bike     Sports Equipment     Garage Openers     Keys

Burglaries to Vehicles:     These occur when items of value are left unattended and in plain view inside the resident’s vehicle.  These are the most common form of burglary.  Some items commonly taken are:

Radar Detectors     Stereo Equipment     CDs     Purses/Checkbooks

* Remember, if you have any packages after shopping, always lock them in your trunk*

Residential Burglaries:     These are typically a crime of opportunity.  Some tips that may prevent you from becoming a victim are:

●Use a deadbolt on your doors and keep your windows locked

●Trim trees or shrubs to provide a clear view of your home

●Get to know your neighbors and who belongs in your neighborhood

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Burglary?

Burglary is knowingly and without authority entering into or remaining within any building…business or other structure which is not a dwelling, with intent to commit a felony, theft or sexual battery therein.

Report any suspicious activity by calling 911!

What is suspicious activity?

You know your neighborhood best.  If you see something suspicious please call 911 and report the suspicious activity right away.

Sometimes citizens see something that they know is not normal for their neighborhood but they are afraid to call the police because we think they are bothering us or we are too busy.

§  If you see a car drive around the block several times watching businesses

§  Someone peeking inside your neighborhood  windows

§  Someone knocking on doors looking around and then going to the back door

·         Please do not be afraid to call 911 if you see suspicious activity

·         If possible note the race, age, sex, height, weight, hair color and type of clothing worn by the suspect or suspects

·         Also note the make, model, tag number and color of the vehicle they are driving.  At night, you may only be able to say the car was (large, medium, small) in size and a (2 door or 4 door).   Note if there is anything unusual about the car such as decals, body damage, rust damage, tinted windows, or loud muffler
