Away From Home

If you are planning on leaving town for vacation there are some things you can do to help protect your house:

  • Have a trusted neighbor watch your house
  • Make sure your trash can is taken down on the designated day
  • Have your mail and paper picked up daily
  • Keep inside lights on a timer set to go on and off at normal times
  • Plan for someone to shovel your drive and sidewalk if it snows
  • Don't put empty boxes out from new electronics you've received. Cut them up and put them in the trash can

Good Samaritan Mobile Medical Clinic:  This program provides FREE medical care for the uninsured to individuals and families.  Their services include: blood pressure checks, dental referrals, sports physicals, employment physicals and preschool/daycare physicals.  The Mobile Medical Clinic serves the citizens of 27 beat every Monday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Glenn Park Christian Church at 2757 S. Glenn.

Southwest Neighborhood Association

If you live on 27 Beat I would encourage you to attend the monthly Southwest Neighborhood Association meeting at 1313 W. Lydia on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 7PM. The Association is one of the strongest and most active in the City. At each meeting there are reports from the Community Police Officers, guest speakers and discussion about topics that pertain to the residents within the Association boundaries.

Vehicle Break-ins

Thefts from vehicles still seems to be a problem in Wichita. Remember to keep all of your valuables out of sight in vehicles or take them in with you. Take a few minutes to help prevent a crime.

Neighborhood Watch

The Neighborhood Watch Program is an effective tool to help fight crime in the areas where we live. It's free, simple and will reduce crime by 70% if run properly. To get started, talk with the people who live on your block. If half of the residents want to participate then email me and we will come up with a time, date and location to have a meeting. The meeting will take about an hour. You will also need to identify a person to be a block captain meaning that they are a point of contact. My email is skcornwell@wichita.gov.

Traveling

If you are going to be on the road this holiday season make sure your vehicle is in good mechanical condition and your tires have good tread on them. Keep some essential supplies handy, such as a blanket, warm coat, heat source, snacks and water. If you are traveling out of town let someone know what route you are taking. Tell them when you are leaving and when you get back home. It is also helpful to have your cell phone battery fully charged.
