Wichita Auto Theft Crime Trends

The crime trend the Auto Theft Section is experiencing in Wichita is the theft of these four top vehicles: Chevy, Honda, Ford, and Dodge vehicles. As of February 8th of 2011, there have been 43 Auto Thefts involving vehicles left unattended while warming up.

1,849 vehicles were reported stolen in 2009. 636 vehciles were recovered. 1141 cases were assigned to five Detectives in the Auto Theft Section for follow-up investigation. 377 cases were charged and 143 cases were cleared by arrest.

Stolen vehicles can be used for a short joyride, stripped for parts, involved in hit and run accidents, or kept longer to commit other crimes.

General Cold Weather Tips:

Stolen vehicles increase drastically because people leave them running to warm them up. If you must warm up your car, consider these ideas:
Make sure you have a spare key and lock the vehicle.
Put on the emergency brake to confuse a would-be thief.
Keep an eye on the vehicle the whole time. Do not do chores around the house while the vehcile is warming up.
Watch for any people or strange vehicles parked in your area. They might be waiting for someone to leave their car running. Don't let that someone be you.
Call 911 to have suspicious persons/vehicles checked out.

Safeguard Your Money

Leave the oversized purse at home and put the cards and cash you need in a wallet close to your body, preferably under a Jacket or sweater. Having to reach under your sweater to get to the wallet in your breast pocket will lessen the chance your pocket will be picked.

Protect Your PIN Number

Stand between the next person in line and the debit card machine when entering your pin number. Do not worry about being rude, it is impolite to stand in view of a person’s personal banking information.

Secure Your Purchases

The bait-and-switch trick is popular during the holidays where someone will switch worthless bag for yours when you are not looking. Do not look away. Keep and eye or a hand on your bag at all times.

Keep It Light

Do not try to carry a large number of bags around. After collecting three or so bags, take them to your car, and put them out of sight in a securely locked compartment.  This way you can shop in comfort and have less of a chance of losing your purchases to criminals.

Be Aware Of Your Surroundings

More so than protecting your valuables, you should also protect your person. Do not walk in abandoned parking lots or halls alone. If you feel uncomfortable for any reason, find mall security and ask for an escort. If you find yourself in an uncomfortable situation, do whatever you must to draw attention to yourself.

Keep An Eye On Your Children

Do not get so caught up in your shopping that you fail to watch your children. With more people in the malls at this time of the year, you have a greater chance of your child being in danger if left alone or allowed go to the rest rooms alone.

Don’t Leave Personal Items Visible In Your Car

Make sure you lock your purchases and other personal items in the trunk of your car.  If you drive an SUV or van, put them beneath the seats or on the floor between the front and back seats, then cover them up with an old coat or blanket.  And, whatever you do, don’t leave your vehicle unattended while warming up in cold weather.  That’s an invitation to thieves to steal it.

School has started and some have asked for the local ordinaces concerning parking around schools.

The following is a list of city ordinances for which a person may be cited.  A person can be cited for one or more of these violations.  Please help us to create a safe environment for our children.

  • Talk to your children about strangers, and about what to do if they are approached by one.  Let them know that strangers will attempt to trick them into going with them by using gifts and fake promises.  When approached by a stranger, advise them to say "no", to run away as fast as possible, and to tell a trusted adult immediately.
  • Do not let your children play alone.  Abductions often occur while children are as close as the front or back yard.  Sometimes a fence isn't all the security that you will need.  Supervise your children or have a trusted adult stay with your child if necessary when they are outside playing or riding their bicycle.  Remember that strangers will look for easy targets.  Do not allow your child to be one.  Teach them to be smart and alert at all times and not to trust people that they do not know.

 "Know Your Money"
There is an increasing problem with a variety of denominations of counterfeit bills being passed in our community to individuals and retail establishments.  The Wichita Police Department and the United States Secret Service have partnered together to provide internet sites to educate everyone on how to "Know Your Money".  The sites are meant to assist you in easily recognizing some of the security features of paper money currency.  Please take a few minutes to view this information.

If you have any questions contact the Financial Crimes Section of the Wichita Police Department at (316) 268-4193.
