Hello everyone.  My name is Officer Ron McHenry.  I am your new Community Policing Officer, however I am not new to the beat.  I was the beat officer on second shift.  I look forward to working with you on any problems that you have.  Please send me an e-mail or give me a call.

WASHINGTON - In order to protect consumers from deals that are too good to be true, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) served court orders seizing 18 domain names of websites selling counterfeit goods over the Internet. This operation dubbed, "Operation Broken Hearted," is the fourth phase of, "Operation in Our Sites," a sustained initiative aimed at counterfeiting and piracy over the Internet.

The 18 domain names seized were commercial websites engaged in the illegal sale and distribution of counterfeit goods. During the course of the operation, federal law enforcement agents made undercover purchases from online retailers suspected of selling counterfeit goods. Purchased counterfeit items included bracelets, earrings, handbags, necklaces, rings, sunglasses, wallets and watches.

The seized counterfeit items represent 14 name brands: Breitling, Burberry, Chanel, Coach, Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Nike, Omega, Patek Philipe, Prada, Rolex , Tiffany & Co. and Timberland.

Online Dating Scams

Millions of Americans use dating sites, social networking sites, and chat rooms to meet people. And many forge successful relationships. But scammers also use these sites to meet potential victims. They create fake profiles to build online relationships, and eventually convince people to send money in the name of love. Some even make wedding plans before disappearing with the money.

An online love interest who asks for money is almost certainly a scam artist.

How to Recognize a Scam Artist

The relationship may not be what you think, especially if your sweetheart:

wants to leave the dating site immediately and use personal email or IM

claims love in a heartbeat

claims to be from the U.S., but is traveling or working overseas

plans to visit, but is prevented by a traumatic event or a business deal gone sour

Scammers also like to say they’re out of the country for business or military service.

What You Can Do About It

You may lose your heart, but you don’t have to lose your shirt, too. Don’t wire money to cover:

travel

medical emergencies

hotel bills

hospital bills for a child or other relative

visas or other official documents

or losses from a temporary financial setback

Don’t send money to tide someone over after a mugging or robbery, and don’t do anyone a favor by making an online purchase or forwarding a package to another country. One request leads to another, and delays and disappointments will follow. In the end, the money will be gone along with the person you thought you knew.

Get involved with your Neighborhood Association!

The Southwest Village NHA meets the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 3214 S. Edwards at 7pm.  You are able to voice concerns for the area in which you live.  Speakers often are present on a variety of topics.  The Wichita Fire Department and the Wichita Police Department attend to discuss current issues and answer any questions.  Next meeting will be January 10th, 2012.  Hope to see you there!

School Parking

We feel that a better understanding of the laws that apply to the School Zones and crosswalks will assist you in making safe and responsible decisions as to where and how to drop off and pick up your children. We appreciate your understanding and assistance in working with us to prevent any future accidents or injuries.

Parking in or around crosswalks or no parking zones is not only a visual hazard, but it is illegal too. Let's work together to keep kids safe.

Who Can I Call?

The Police Department often receives calls about neighborhood problems such as animals being left in poor conditions, abandoned houses or inoperable cars left on private property. The city has several sections to deal with these problems. Below is a list of those departments and a sample of the types of issues they handle.

Animal Control 268-8473 - Leash laws, animal bites, animal care and conditions and issued animal license.

Environmental Health 268-8351 - Improper or no household trash collection, trash on premises, tall grass and weeds, animal hoarding, run down buildings and illegal dumping.

Office Of Central Inspection 268-4460 - Illegal parking in front yard, RV's, boats etc. improperly stored, signs in public right of way, emergency board up of vacant houses.
