Identifying your Property
- If you have looked at the “What Burglars Take” tab please take the time to record the model and serial numbers on those items. If your home is burglarized and you have not recorded these numbers it will be very difficult for the police to find and return your property. A large majority of all property taken in home burglaries has serial numbers but the homeowner never records those numbers.
- Sometimes serial numbers are removed or hard to read so it is a good idea to engrave your property.
- Buy an engraver or borrow one from your nearest police sub-station. We recommend that you engrave your Kansas Drivers License Number on property you value. When a police officer sees property that he suspects is stolen, the drivers license number will give him the name and address of the owner.
- Hand tools such as wrenches and sockets do not usually have serial numbers. They are easy to pawn at pawn shops and one wrench pretty much looks like another unless you engrave it.
- An engraver should not be used on jewelry unless a professional jeweler does it. If you decide to engrave your firearm, pick a place that is not highly visible such as under the grips. Engraving a firearm could affect its resale value.
- Expensive jewelry should be appraised and photographed. If you can, take a close-up picture of any jewelry you value. If you do not have a camera, try making a drawing to give the police an idea what to look for. Describe any jewelry as best you can before it is stolen. If your initials are engraved on the inside of a ring, please record this also.
- Remember, describe your property, record the serial and model numbers, consider engraving it with your drivers license number if practical, and then store this valuable information in a safe place. One copy at home and one copy at work. This will help you get your property back and help your burglary detectives catch the bad guys.
