Narcotics Detection Canine Unit

Detective Bryan Martin & Rex

Bryan Martin joined the Wichita Police Department in 1994 as a patrol officer serving in the field in both the East and North sides of Wichita.  In February of 1999 Bryan was promoted to the rank of Detective and joined the Special Investigations Bureau in the Undercover Unit.  During his time in the Special Investigations Bureau Detective Martin realized the importance and abilities of a narcotic detection canine.  Detective Martin diligently pursued acquiring a narcotics detection canine by the Wichita Police Department.

In May of 2003 Rex, a 4 year old Belgian Malinois, joined the Wichita Police Department as Detective Martins partner.  Rex specializes in narcotic detection, evidence recovery and handler protection.  Rex was able to join the Wichita Police Department due to a donation by Milk-Bone and Dillions.  Since that time Rex has proven to be an invaluable member of the Special Investigations Bureau and the Wichita Police Department.

Detective Martin and Rex not only work with the Special Investigation Bureau, but also with Patrol to assist with the detection of narcotics.  Detective Martin and Rex are actively involved in the interdiction of narcotics being transported through and in Wichita.  In addition to these duties, Detective Martin and Rex are responsible for working closely with the Hotel and Motels in Wichita.  Detective Martin and Rex often are requested to assist other agencies and business in Wichita including the Wichita Airport, DEA, and The United States Postal Service as well as business such as U.P.S. and Fed Ex.  Detective Martin and Rex are also called upon by USD 259 to assist the schools with suspected narcotic situations.

The success of Detective Martin and Rex led the way to the acquisition of a second canine unit in July of 2004 named Elza.  Elza and her handler, Officer Eddy Padron, are assigned to the Patrol North division.

Since joining the Department Rex and Elza have been called out to incidents 430 times.  As a result of their efforts, police were able to make arrests and take dangerous drugs off Wichita streets, including 1,735 grams of cocaine, 2,765 grams of methamphetamine and 700 pounds of marijuana.  Their efforts have also resulted in the seizure of over $57,000.00 and several vehicles used in narcotic trafficking.  Because of the excelent work of Rex, Elza and their handlers, a third canine is soon to join the ranks of the Wichita Police Department.
