Welcome to the Wichita Police Department’s Public Information page! We are pleased that you found us and are anxious to provide you with pertinent information on the law enforcement services that the men and women of the WPD provide to the Wichita community.

Here you will find a multitude of informative web pages including crime statistics, the latest events, awards, WPD programs and initiatives, how to join the Department as an Officer or as a volunteer and on line forms.

Let me tell you a little about our Department. The Wichita Police Department is a values-based organization that adopted a community policing philosophy in 1994. WPD is the largest police department in the state of Kansas. It is comprised of 653 Commissioned Officers and 192 civilian employees, and operates on a $55 million yearly budget. The men and women of the Wichita Police Department proudly serve their Wichita community, which includes almost 400,000 citizens and covers 153 square miles. The city itself is culturally diverse, rich in heritage, and our citizens take great pride in their community and their police department.

In 2000, the Department adopted the following new Mission and Value Statement.

The Wichita Police Department’s mission is to provide professional and ethical public safety services in partnership with citizens to identify, prevent and solve the problems of crime, fear of crime, social disorder and neighborhood decay, thereby improving the quality of life in our community.

The community policing philosophy serves as the corner stone of all WPD operations. The Wichita Police Department is committed to providing the best possible services to our citizens and visitors. Wichita has seen a decrease in crime over the past several years largely due to the partnerships we have formed with the community.

Because of our proactive, inclusive approach to law enforcement, WPD has been the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions. Most notably are the three Webber Seavey Awards bestowed upon the Department for quality in law enforcement. The Webber Seavey is an international award that is presented yearly to three law enforcement agencies. The Wichita Police Department is the only law enforcement agency in the world to have won the coveted Webber Seavey award twice and been a finalist once. You will find more information on these projects here at our website.

Our Department’s operations are divided into three divisions: Field Services, Investigations and Support Services. Most of the Investigations and Support Services operations are housed in City Hall at 455 N. Main. Field Services personnel operate from four substations that are strategically located in four quadrants of the city: North, South, East and West. Each substation is home to approximately 130 commissioned and civilian employees including Beat Officers, Community Policing Beat Coordinators, School Resource Officers, Special Community Action Team Officers and Traffic Officers.

We hope you enjoy browsing our website.
