| The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team was formed in the late 1960's, and remains as a secondary assignment. The team currently has eight (8) HDS certified Hazardous Devices Technicians, and four Assistant Technicians. The unit is assigned to the Special Operations Bureau. The Wichita Police Department's EOD Team is one of only several bomb units within the State of Kansas, and the only team within the southern half of the state. The EOD Team supports the regional office of BATF responding to their explosive request in the 19 counties within their South Central Region. They are called upon to respond to any incident which requires handling or securing of explosives, suspected devices, or weapons of mass destruction. In addition the unit handles all post blast investigations, conducts bomb threat awareness programs for corporations, and other police departments. |

The wreath is symbolic of the achievements and laurels gained in minimizing accidents potentials, through the ingenuity and devotion to duty of its members. It is in the memory of those EOD officers and military personnel who gave their lives while performing EOD duties.
The bomb is copied from the design of the World War II Bomb Disposal Badge, the bomb represents the historic and major objective of the EOD attack, the unexploded bomb. The three fins represent the major area of nuclear, conventional and chemical/biological interest.
The lightning bolts symbolize the potential destructive power of the bomb and the courage and professionalism of EOD personnel in their endeavors to reduce hazards as well as to render explosive ordnance harmless.
The shield represents the EOD mission - prevent a detonation and protect the surrounding area and property to the utmost. |
