The Wichita Police Department Honor Guard is assigned to the Special Operations Bureau. The Honor Guard performs military style honors at funeral services of officers killed in the line of duty as well deaths of current and retired officers. They also attend special memorial services within the City of Wichita and other functions. Some of the duties the Honor Guard provide include standing guard over a casket, escorting bereaved family members, flag ceremonies, twenty-one gun salutes and the playing of taps among others. All members of the Police Honor Guard are commissioned Wichita Police Officers. Each year during Law Enforcement Memorial Week the Wichita Police Department's Honor Guard along with the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Department Honor Guard attend a special memorial service honoring the Wichita Police Officers and Sedgwick County Sheriff's Deputies who have given their lives to protect the citizens of Wichita and Sedgwick County.
