Mission

The mission of the Wichita Police S.W.A.T. Unit is to provide for the protection of life and property during operations which require a high degree of training and teamwork and go beyond the standard patrol response capability.

Function

The S.W.A.T. Unit is an auxiliary unit composed of specially trained commissioned members of the Wichita Police Department. The S.W.A.T. Unit neutralizes and removes snipers, barricaded or hostage holding individuals and others who threaten public safety. The S.W.A.T. Unit responds to terrorist activities, conducts riot control, provides dignitary protection and assists in serving selected search and arrest warrants.

In hostage and/or barricaded suicidal subject situations, the S.W.A.T. Unit utilizes specially trained hostage negotiators. The primary function of the Wichita Police Negotiator is the preservation of human life during critical incidents. The negotiator uses dialogue to defuse volatile situations allowing a restoration of calm and reason which can lead to the successful resolution of the crisis. The negotiator is a commissioned law enforcement officer.
