Mission
The mission of the Special Operations Bureau is to provide specialized police services to the City of Wichita and the community through unique operations that require specific skills and expertise using advanced equipment and technology. This mission is accomplished through the use of highly trained personnel providing unique operational and tactical procedures that combine traditional police services with modern problem solving techniques and partnerships that include other government service agencies and the citizens that we serve.
Function
The Special Operations Bureau is part of the uniformed Support Services Division. Working in partnership with other sections of the Department, other agencies, and citizens, the Accident Follow-up Unit conducts follow-up investigations of traffic accidents, misdemeanor and felony traffic cases, and develops strategies to reduce traffic accidents within the community. The Office of Emergency Planning and Security provides a focal point for interagencey cooperation, prepardness, and public-private partnerships. Aerial support for police operations is provided by the Air Section flying a modern MD500E helicopter. Tactical support for high risk calls are the responsibility of the SWAT Unit, while explosive device identification and removal is provided by the EOD Unit. The Mounted Unit is utilized for high visibility patrols and for special events where the use of horses reduce the need for police personnel. Ceremonial functions and funerals for fallen officers are a few of the many events in which the Honor Guard provides assistance. Auxiliary uniform suppport is provided by the volunteer Police Reserves. Ministerial services for victims and employess are provided by the volunteer Police Chaplain Section. |
