MISSION STATEMENT

 

The Mission of the Wichita Police Department Records Bureau is to manage all City law enforcement records throughout their lifetime, from generation or reception, clarification, review, validation, updating, storage and retrieval to final destruction or archival storage; to efficiently disseminate the documentation per Federal, State and local laws to law enforcement, criminal justice, government agencies, citizens and their agents; and provide Wichita Police and other criminal justice agencies special policing support.

HOURS OF OPERATION
The Records Bureau is a twenty-four (24) hour, seven (7) day a week operation. This hour of operation is essential to provide the support needed for the Department and as well as the community of Wichita.

S.P.I.D.E.R. UNIT     (Special Police Information Data Entry Retrieval)
The Wichita Police Department S.P.I.D.E.R. Unit operates twenty‑four (24) hours daily, seven (7) days per week. This unit is staffedwith ten (10) dispatch positions. The mission of the S.P.I.D.E.R. unit is to collect and disseminate information, by various means of communications, to law enforcement agencies of the area and nation, and to others authorized to receive such information.

IMAGING UNIT
The Imaging Unit has the responsibility of archiving non-current year police documentation. They also assist with retrieval of archived reports for research and investigative requests. 

WORD-PROCESSING SECTION
The Word Processing section has the responsibility of:

•     Transcribing Additional Information Reports from the officers’ digital recordings into Record Management System supplements to the original case incidents. The typed documents are used for reference and are maintained as a permanent record in the incident.

•     Preparing numerous types of reports for the various investigating sections of the department, as well as preparation of special typing requests for command officers.

FINGERPRINT UNIT
The Fingerprint Unit was created to form the following duties, classification of fingerprints, maintaining the fingerprint files and comparison of fingerprints, quality control of arrest information, plus various assorted duties. Two Service Officers staff the Fingerprint Unit.   

CASE DESK
Case Desk is a twenty-four (24) hour operation, seven (7) days per week. Incidents from the citizens and officers are entered in the Record Management System. Personnel are assigned as follows: 

CENTRAL RECORDS
The Central Records Unit provides service to the citizens and departmental members by performing the following duties:

•      Provide customer service at front counter.

•      Handle requests via telephone.

•      Process reported charges that are printable.

•      Process criminal history record information requests.

•      Process all applications.

•      Rotate case file to provide adequate storage.

•      Disseminate mail.

•      Monitor counter supplies.

•      File hook-ups.

CASE REVIEW UNIT
The Case Review Unit has the responsibility of maintaining quality control over the vast amount of paperwork that flows through the department daily. The Unit consists of three Administrative Aides working one per shift with Saturdays and Sundays off.
