QUALIFICATIONS
Police Recruit applicants must meet the following initial requirements:

Be at least 21 years old by the time of hire.

Be a United States citizen.
-
Be a high school graduate or have a GED certificate.
-
If you have had military service, discharge must be "honorable," or "under honorable conditions."
-
Be able to obtain a valid Kansas driver's license by time of hire.
-
Be able to live within the city limits, or within 30 minutes lawful driving time of the city limits, within the required time limits after hire.
-
Must pass all the steps listed under "Application Process."

Must satisfy all requirements as set forth in K.S.A. 74-5605
-
Must satisfy all requirements as set forth by the City of Wichita.
-
Vision standard meets Visual Acuity Standard Uncorrected 20/100 and Visual Acuity Standard Corrected 20/30
-
No evidence of deception or subterfuge demonstrated during the pre-employment process. Applicants who do not meet this qualifier may have their files reviewed on a case-by-case basis at the Training Bureau Commander's discretion.

No convictions of morals, drugs or weapons charges in the past five years.
-
No convictions of misdemeanor crimes of violence, or use of physical force or threat thereof, during the preceding five years.
-
No convictions, diversions, or expungements of DUI during the past two years.
-
No convictions of misdemeanor property crimes within the past two years.
-
No more than two moving violation convictions, or being at fault in more than one traffic accident during the past twelve months.
-
No convictions, diversions, or expungements of any felony crime.
The following additional minimum standards involve activities which may to date have been unreported to or undetected by law enforcement, but which will result in disqualification if discovered during the pre-employment process or thereafter.

No undetected illegal misdemeanor drug possession or use in the past two years.
-
No illegal distribution or sale of any drug.
-
No undetected misdemeanor crimes involving morals or weapons charges in the past five years.
-
No undetected commissions of misdemeanor crime of violence, or use of physical force or threat thereof, during the past five years.
-
No undetected commissions of misdemeanor property crimes during the past two years.

Any undetected commission of felony crime (including usage of felony drugs) will result in immediate disqualification. Any information relative to criminal prosecution will be forwarded to the proper jurisdiction.

Applicants who are subject to disqualification based on the above criteria may have their files reviewed on a case-by-case basis at the Training Bureau Commander's discretion.

APPLICATION PROCESS
To become a Police Recruit the following steps must be completed:

All applications are completed online. You will be asked to fill out additional paperwork as the application process continues. The online application can be completed at wichita.gov or by selecting the Complete Application for employment link at the bottom of this page.

The physical agility test is conducted every Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. at the Wichita Sedgwick County Law Enforcement Training Center. (Weather permitting) The applicant will first be required to complete the suspect chase. The suspect chase consists of negotiating a five-foot wall, a three-foot wall, running and climbing through a window four feet from the ground, then running back to the starting line in 47 seconds. Total distance is 160 yards. The suspect chase is located on Academy grounds in Sherwood Park so applicants can practice at their leisure. The second portion of the physical agility test is the body drag. This consists of dragging a 158 lb. dummy 30 feet in 9 seconds or less.

Successfully passing the Command Staff Interview. This interview panel consists of a Lieutenant, Captain, Deputy Chief, and Chief of Police.
OUT OF STATE APPLICANTS
An out of state applicant must make their first trip to Wichita for the aptitude test, first contact interview, and physical agility test. The applicant must return for their oral board interview and polygraph examination. A third and final trip may be required for the Command Staff Interview, physical examination and psychological examination.

Fill-in forms give you a cleaner crisper printout for your records and for filing with the City of Wichita's Personnel Division. You may print the blank application if you desire and fill it out later if desired.
