On July 26, 1990, President Bush signed into law the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The intent of the ADA is to prevent discrimination against qualified people with disabilities in employment, public services, public accommodations, telecommunication services and transportation.
The law is comprised of five separate titles. Title II of this law prohibits discrimination in programs operated by public entities such as state and local governments, which includes public transportation. Under the guidance of the transportation portion of the law, any new public transit buses ordered after August 26, 1990, must be accessible to individuals with disabilities.
Wichita Transit currently operates eighteen (18) bus routes which are of a "fixed" path of travel. Wichita Transit is dedicated to the transport of individuals with disabilities and in April of 2002, received its final delivery of 39 new buses. With these new buses operating on the streets of Wichita, it enabled Wichita Transit to be 100% fully ADA-compliant and accessible.
