Kansas One Call/Dig Safe - Utility Locating
The System Planning and Development division is responsible for, not only marking water and sanitary sewer lines, but is also responsible for storm drainage; groundwater remediation; City fiber network; and traffic signalization lines.
The division does its best to protect, against damage, facilities for which the City is responsible. Depending on the work load, the division is not always able to fully mark infrastructure according to every request that comes through. In this situation staff prioritizes based on the type of work that needs to be done and where it needs to be done. For example, gardens and trees are items that should only be on private property or not in any right-of-way or easement. Therefore, when necessary, tickets with this description may be bypassed. However, staff is always willing to work with the public.
Our staff is readily available to take calls about the location of City facilities. System Planning can be reached Monday - Friday between 7:30 AM and 4:30 PM (except for weekends and holidays) at (316) 268-4555.
Also, one should be aware that unlike some other utilities, the department does not and cannot mark all lines completely up to the building. In regards to water, our field staff does not mark past the meter box. Any infrastructure past the meter box belongs to the property owner.
In regards to sanitary sewer, field staff is unable to mark the properties lateral from the building to the public line. System Planning in cooperation with the Office of Central Inspection is usually able to tell the property owner where their lateral connects to the City main.
