Water is Life and Infrastructure Makes it Happen TM: (Please check two speakers, as options)

Wichita Water Utilities partners with a national awareness campaign titled, "Water is Life and Infrastructure Makes it Happen." Presenters give an overview of the Water Utilities Department and highlight its annual accomplishments. Presenters share with the audience the vision and mission of Water Utilities’ 24-hour, seven-day-a-week operations that focus on the replacement, rehabilitation and maintenance of the city's water and sewer infrastructure.

Water for the Future - The ASR Project

The Equus Beds Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) project is a nationally acclaimed and award-winning project. This presentation is designed to address Phase II of the ASR Project and provide you with the latest information about the City’s efforts to develop a new water resource.

The ASR project is the single largest capital improvement project in the history of Water Utilities. With a price tag of $350 to $400 million, the ASR project takes water from the Little Arkansas River, pumps it underground into the Equus Beds aquifer and stores it there until it is needed by Wichita and its customers. Without the ASR project, demand for water in Wichita would exceed our supply within the next 10 years and we would face a water shortage.

What are We Putting in our Water?

Historically, surplus and expired medications were commonly disposed of through sanitary sewer systems. However, research has found medications and their byproducts in ground and surface waters, suggesting that this disposal method is not completely effective in preventing contamination. Though Wastewater Treatment Systems reduce the concentrations of the medications introduced into the sewer system, they are not designed to totally eliminate medications and their byproducts.

Caroline Hosford’s presentation reiterates the "be safe, be aware" environmental message.

Efficient Water Use

Today, with the turn of a tap, an abundance of high quality, inexpensive water is available instantly. Because of this convenience, many of us have formed wasteful habits of "running" water without using it. Tomorrow, conservative use of water will be the way of life. In some areas, there are already water shortages.

How did you hear about the Wichita Water Utilities' P.U.R.E. Speaker's Bureau?
