What is the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility?

The HHW Facility is a place Sedgwick County residents can dispose of old chemicals and household hazardous waste free of charge. It offers a way to get rid of old chemicals and materials to help prevent them from getting into the waste stream and polluting the environment.

What are the proper steps to disposing of expired or unused Pharmaceuticals?

Research has found medications and their byproducts in ground and surface waters, suggesting that disposal of old or unused medications down the toilet is not a completely effective way of preventing contamination.  Click here to review the steps to the proper disposal of pharmaceuticals.

Doesn’t the City of Wichita operate a HHW Facility?

The City of Wichita did operate a facility at 2305 E. 57th Street South, but Sedgwick County took over responsibilities for Household Hazardous Waste disposal on January 1, 2002. The facility in south Wichita closed when the new HHW facility opened.
