Wichita Water Utilities professional, full-time staff are responsible for identifying and locating City of Wichita owned and operated underground utilities including: Raw and Potable Water Remediation Projects Storm Drains Sanitary Sewer Fiber Optic Networks Traffic Signalization For assistance with emergency locate requests please contact Water Utilities staff at 268-4260. Emergency locate requests, as defined under KSA 66-1807 are those that: "involve danger to life, health, or property or which require immediate correction in order to continue the operation of an industrial plant or to assure the continuity of public utility service . . ." Water Utilities schedules and completes all non-emergency locate requests within two full business days. Locate requests are prioritized based upon the nature of the excavation work being completed and its location. Requests involving excavation by other utilities or contractors in easements and right-of-ways receive the highest priority, with other requests prioritized accordingly. Water Utilities staff places a lower priority on locating utilities for planting shrubs, trees, or gardens as these plantings in easements and right-of-ways are discouraged. Water Utilities staff will not locate the service line from the water meter to a structure or the building sewer connecting to a City sanitary sewer. Office of Central Inspection (OCI) is frequently able to provide information for locating these private services. After utility locates are completed you may find a variety of markings, either in paint, flags, or both, on the ground. A quick guide to the color code employed is below.
