|Proposed Budget Released Today|
Wichita City Manager Robert Layton released the 2017-18 Proposed Budget. The Budget will be presented to the City Council at the regularly scheduled City Council meeting on July 12 (9:00 a.m. in the City Council Chambers). The City Council will hold a formal hearing on the Budget at the August 2, 2016 regularly scheduled meeting. Residents are encouraged to visit www.wichita.gov
to review the budget. In keeping with City Council policies, the 2017 Budget:
• Maintains a stable mill levy rate, for the 23rd consecutive year;
• Includes reserves of nearly $28 million, in accordance with policy;
• And continues emphasis on strategic priorities, including public safety.
During the past six years, the General Fund budget has grew very little and more than 150 City positions were eliminated. At the direction of City Council, the City focused on strategic priorities (including public safety) and reduced costs. Based off past efforts, the 2017 Proposed Budget is balanced, does not include significant programmatic reductions, and will serve as a foundation for the future.
Community engagement again played a key role in the development of the budget. For the fifth consecutive year, the City held a Social Media Town Hall event to share service delivery issues and receive feedback. Neighborhood meetings in conjunction with the District Advisory Boards were held in each Council District. Discussions with other community groups as well as City employees were held. Two social media events on Facebook and Twitter produced 194,509 page views, 667 comments, and 1,254 Facebook reactions.
Public hearings will be held on August 2 and August 9. The City Council is scheduled to take action on the budget on August 9.
