This park was acquired by the Board of Park Commissioners with a grant from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development through the "Parks-in-Cities" program in 1972.

The Canal Hike and Bike Trails is a 4.9 mile trail that runs underneath and alongside the I-135 Canal Route, starting at 17th Street North and ending at Stafford Street (just north of Pawnee).
Founder of the Wichita Eagle and served as state senator (1869-1874) and Wichita postmaster.
Murdock Street is named after him.
