Mayor’s Youth Council Recruitment Opens

Emily Stephens, Regional Prevention Center/Mirror, Inc., (316) 262-2421 | Linsey Sipult, City Manager’s Office,, (316) 268-4351

Sign up at area high schools this week through April

The Wichita Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC) is seeking local youth to fill 40 youth-council spots available for the 2010-2011 school year. Representatives from the City and Regional Prevention Center will set up information and applications tables during lunch periods from starting this week through April 2 at Wichita area high schools.

The MYC provides Wichita youth with an opportunity to weigh in on community issues and learn about City government. The organization is focused on community service and volunteering, but also serves as an outlet for youth to provide input on issues being considered by the City Council. This year the MYC conducted a shoe drive for Wichitans in need, met with Gov. Parkinson to discuss its legislative agenda and is sponsoring a youth leadership summit in April.

Potential members must be entering or currently attending high school in the fall and live within the Wichita city limits, but may attend schools outside the Wichita area, such as Maize, Valley Center, and Andover. Applicants must also have a grade-point average of at least 2.5. Students interested in applying are encouraged to visit their high school guidance counselor and visit for more information.
