More than 40 Years of Service

Michael L. Rudd, Deputy Fire Chief and director of the Department's Emergency Operations Command is retiring after more than 40 years of dedicated service with the City of Wichita. Deputy Chief Rudd continues to battle cancer. His last day with the City will be Friday, March 5th.

Rudd began employment with the Wichita Fire Department in 1969, as a 19 year-old with aspirations of eventually becoming a Wichita Police Officer. He felt the Fire Department would be a good stepping stone to gain employment with the Police Department. However he changed his mind during his first year as a firefighter after he was able to help save the life of a man who was trapped in a burning home. At that time, he realized he wanted to help others through the Fire Department.

Rudd is known for his outstanding work ethic, often working long hours at emergency incidents and in his office addressing administrative tasks.

"Mike brought a boundless energy to work every day,” Fire Chief Ronald D. Blackwell said. “He will be missed and long remembered as one the best tactical and strategic thinking officers this department has ever produced.”

Deputy Chief Rudd rose through the ranks and honorably served as a Firefighter, Fire Lieutenant, Fire Captain, Fire Battalion Chief, Fire Division Chief and Deputy Fire Chief. He was recognized by the Devore Foundation in 1996 with the “Excellence In Public Service Award.” He is a graduate of Wichita State University and the National Fire Academy's Executive Fire Officer Program.
