Beginning Monday, April 12, travelers to Wichita’s Mid Continent Airport will find the exit ramp from westbound U.S. 54/400 (West Kellogg) to Mid-Continent Drive closed as Kansas Department of Transportation’s contractor will finish last winter’s project on the ramp’s bridge. Access to the airport will be available by using southbound Ridge Road. The detour is minor and adds just a few minutes onto travel time to the airport terminal.
The project was suspended for the winter so that parts could be fabricated for the bridge support system. Also, the polymer overlay on the bridge deck is a temperature dependent process and was not completed before cooler weather arrived in late fall.
The project should be completed in one month but if other problems become apparent as they make repairs to the bridge, it could take longer.
This project involves repair of bridge piers and abutments (supports at each end of the structure), expansion joints, driving surface, guard rail and bridge approaches. A polymer overlay will be applied to the bridge deck to protect the surface from damage caused by water and winter roadway treatment.
Wildcat Construction of Wichita is the prime contractor of the $488,096 project.
