The Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC) will lead a Community Service Day scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. More than 150 high school students have registered for the event, which begins and concludes at Old Town Square where organizers will conclude the event with refreshments and congratulations from Wichita City Council members.

This event was planned by the Leadership and Community Service and Support committees of the Mayor’s Youth Council, with the help of adult advisors and parents. Supplies have been provided by Star Lumber Building Supply, Inc.

Among the local agencies providing volunteer opportunities are Lifeline Animal Shelter, Riverbank Restoration, City of Wichita Park and Recreation Department, Trees for Life/Books for Life and Habitat for Humanity ReStore. For more information regarding volunteer locations, please contact Emily Stephens at 648-3660.

The MYC was formed in 2007 to provide Wichita youth an opportunity to weigh in on community issues and learn about government. The Youth Council is comprised of 40 Wichita high school students. Students on the council elect a youth mayor, vice-mayor, seven committee chairs, city manager, clerk of council and sergeant-at-arms. The remaining members represent the General Council and each belongs to one of seven committees.
