Fourth of July-themed activities planned all day Saturday

Old Cowtown Museum is the place to be this Saturday for the ultimate Fourth of July party. “Celebrate America” festivities will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., giving families the perfect mix of old-style entertainment and modern-day family fun. Watermelon seed spitting contests, carnival games, magic shows, dancing by the Dixie Lee Saloon Girls, sack races and live music are just some of the activities. Regular admission rates apply (see below for rates). Cowtown is located at 1865 W. Museum Blvd.

One new event to the Celebrate America schedule is a Celebrity Pie Eating Contest featuring local media personalities. The contest will begin at 1 p.m. at the Train Depot. Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer will serve as the official timekeeper and name the first-ever winner out of this pie-eating group:

  • Tracy Cassidy, B98 FM
  • Brett Harris, B98 FM
  • Chris Elliott, Wichita Eagle
  • Chris Frank, KAKE Channel 10
  • Rebecca Gannon, KWCH Channel 12 and Fox Eyewitness News at 9
  • Shane Konicki, KSCW Channel 33, Cable 5 (Kansas CW Crew)
  • Michelle Loss, KSCW Channel 33, Cable 5 (Kansas CW Crew)
  • Leon Smitherman, KSN Channel 3

In addition to family entertainment, food will be sold at the Empire House by the Diamond W Wranglers Chuckwagon and throughout the grounds. Adults and kids will have their choice of BBQ, popcorn, shaved ice, lemonade, hot dogs, sarsaparilla and more. The Fritz Snitzler’s Beer Garden will be located behind the Saloon.
