Media are encouraged to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the West Street improvement project beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday at 520 N. West Street. Specifically, the ceremony will take place on the northeast corner of St. Louis and West Street (south of Central), a former bowling alley facility with parking on site.
Scheduled to attend the event are Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer, Council Member Janet Miller, Council Member Paul Gray, Public Works Director Chris Carrier and City Engineer Jim Armour.
West Street is a key business corridor for west Wichita, with a traffic count of about 24,000 vehicles a day. The improvements, which total $9.6 million and stretch from Maple to Central, add a center left-turn lane and protected left turns at Douglas and at 2nd Street. The improvements also include new stormwater drainage.
Design work started in 2004; right-of-way acquisition began in 2005; and construction of the $6 million drainage outfall system (a separate project) occurred in 2005-06. Underground and above-ground utilities were relocated in 2008 and early 2009. West Street construction began May 2009.
