Wichita area residents can find out if they have unclaimed cash and property in the hands of the state during a Friday visit by State Treasurer Dennis McKinney and his staff.

The state officials will be at the Atwater City Hall, 2755 E. 19th St. North from noon to 3:30 p.m. Friday, July 23, as part of a statewide Unclaimed Property Returns Tour.

The Unclaimed Property account contains more than $200 million in inactive savings and checking accounts, uncashed checks, stock shares and bonds, dividend checks, insurance proceeds, mineral royalties, and utility deposits. The list includes 192,927 unclaimed properties valued at over $25 million in Sedgwick County.

In addition to cash, stocks and bonds, safe deposit boxes are also turned over to the State Treasurer’s office on an annual basis. There are currently over 15,718 safe deposit box properties on file. Approximately 600 new boxes are turned over to the treasurer’s office each year.

“I encourage everyone in the area to stop by and check their name and the names of family and friends,” State Treasurer McKinney said. “During previous stops, we have found that reaching out to people in their hometowns has been an effective way to locate property owners who would otherwise wouldn’t know if they had unclaimed property.”

Making a claim is free and easy. There are no fees involved in searching for or claiming cash and property. To search, a last name is required and a first name is recommended.

Residents who are unable to attend the Atwater City Hall session can also call the State Treasurer’s office at 1-800-432-0386 or log onto www.KansasCash.com to search for unclaimed property.
