Updated Alarm Ordinance Takes Effect

8/25/2010
Communications Team | (316) 268-4351

Wichita residents and businesses with alarm systems have been receiving alarm permit renewal notices during the past week. The alarm renewal fee, which costs $25, is the result of revisions to the City of Wichita’s Alarm Systems Ordinance. The new law took effect on Aug. 1.

The revised ordinance increased the alarm system registration fee from a one-time fee of $10 to the annual $25 fee. Most customers should receive a bill in August. This fee is necessary to partially offset Police Department costs of administering the false alarm ordinance.

The fees will help offset administrative costs for managing false alarms at residences and businesses. If a residential or commercial account is inactive but the former security alarm customer receives a renewal notice, please call (877) 888-1355 to cancel the fee and close the account.

The false alarm fees were also updated to reflect different fee structures for security (police) and fire alarms. Under the revised ordinance, alarm customers will not be charged for the first false alarm during a permit year. Following is a chart detailing rising fees for each false alarm.
