International Association of Fire Chiefs’ Safety, Health and Survival Section

Wichita Fire Chief Ronald D. Blackwell has been elected by his peers to serve as part of the International Association of Fire Chiefs’ (IAFC) Safety, Health and Survival section. Blackwell was sworn in today during the annual International Association of Fire Chiefs’ conference in Chicago.

Blackwell was recognized by his peers for his outstanding leadership as well as his commitment to the occupational health and safety of firefighters. During his tenure as Wichita’s Fire Chief, Blackwell has focused on firefighter safety, community outreach and maximizing existing resources.

The Safety, Health and Survival Section was established in 2005 to focus on policies and issues relating to the health and safety of firefighters. The IAFC has always considered those categories to be among the most important areas of concern for all fire chiefs.

Prior to becoming Wichita Fire Chief in October 2007, Blackwell served in Anne Arundel County Maryland and in Prince George's County as fire chief. From 1975 to June 1999, Blackwell served in the Wichita Fire Department (WFD) as deputy fire chief. Before joining the WFD, Blackwell served as an airport safety officer for Wichita Mid-Continent Airport and as a fire protection specialist with the United States Air Force.

He has a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in public administration from Wichita State University. He is an executive fire officer graduate from the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
