Free Family Activities
The second annual Wichita Play Day will be held 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at O.J. Watson Park, 3022 S. McLean Boulevard. The free event for the whole family includes races, face painting, parachute games, horseshoes, sidewalk chalk, train, canoe, kayak rides, and more.
Wichita Play Day is sponsored by the Wichita Play Commission. It provides a way to address the urgent health issues of children. Studies show today’s youth spend half as much time outdoors as children 20 years ago. The Play Commission, through the City’s Park and Recreation Department, is asking families to make play a priority through fun, recreational activities.
“Wichita needs to invest in its children by teaching them to build active, healthy bodies which will keep them from becoming overweight,” Wichita Council Member Lavonta Williams said. “In addition, for children whose lives have become hectic, the use of play helps reduce their amount of stress and anxiety. The same is true for adults, so I encourage all of Wichita to recommit to taking time to play.”
Recently, Wichita was recognized for the second consecutive year as a national Playful City USA community by KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit organization. KaBOOM!, promotes a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America.
