October 3-9, 2010

The 2010 Fire Prevention Week will be observed October 3-9 in the City of Wichita. To promote the campaign the Wichita Fire Department (WFD) has scheduled a number of activities which are open to the public. All of the events begin at 10 a.m. except for the Old Cowtown Fire Safety Fair which starts at 9 a.m.

Monday, October 4th Smoke Detector Installation Blitz: The WFD will install 10 year battery operated smoke detectors in the homes of some pre-determined senior citizens. Approximately 25 detectors will be installed. The program is a joint collaboration between the WFD and the Sedgwick County Department of Aging.

Tuesday, October 5th Fire Prevention Zoo Day: The WFD will join forces with other fire departments and public service agencies to host a safety event at the Sedgwick County Zoo. Area 5th grade students have been invited to interact with firefighters and other public safety personnel. They will also participate in fire prevention activities.

Wednesday, October 6th Health, Safety and Fitness Awareness Day: The WFD will present a prevention program at the North Branch YMCA located at 3330 N. Woodlawn. All City and County Home Schools have been invited to attend. Students will practice life safety skills and learn about health, wellness and good nutrition. Students will also have an opportunity to “dunk” a firefighter in a dunk tank.

Thursday, October 7th Senior File of Life Caravan: The WFD staff will present the File of Life program at nine area senior citizen centers. File of Life is a program which teaches residents how to prepare their medical information so firefighters can easily access it in the event of an emergency.

Friday, October 8th Old Cowtown Fire Safety Fair: 9:00 a.m. The WFD will host a safety event for area grade school students. Students will practice how to escape a burning house and watch the Department’s Heavy Rescue Team perform rescue demonstrations.

Friday, October 8th Fire Station Tours at the “Big House” Fire Station #1: Guided tours will be conducted at Fire Station One located at Main and Murdock. It is the only fire station where firefighters slide down poles when responding to alarms. Call the Fire Prevention Office at 268-4441 to schedule a tour.

Saturday, October 9th Ashley K-9 Park Dedication: Attend a dedication ceremony at Chapin Park, 2400 East McArthur. A portion of the Park will be named after Ashley, the WFD’s first K-9 Arson Dog. Firefighters will also have large fire trucks on display at the Park.
